Social media platform Twitter has recently enabled a Bitcoin-branded hashtag, with the emoji appearing after typing “#bitcoin” or “#btc.”

Bitcoin Emoji Now On Twitter

Bitcoin continues to gain recognition, practically in all spheres of our lives. Its latest recognition comes from the social media world where Twitter has made the Bitcoin emoji part of its universe.

Announcing this latest development on Sunday, Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey revealed that Twitter users can now use the Bitcoin symbol as an emoji. The emoji appears immediately after a user types the Bitcoin or BTC hashtag (#bitcoin” or “#btc.)

Dorsey, who has been a big fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, called for the Bitcoin emoji to become a part of the universal web standard. If that happens, then the Bitcoin emoji will be accessible to billions of people connected to the Internet across the globe.

Jack Dorsey’s tweet tagged the Twitter account for Unicode (the computer text and emoji standard for the World Wide Web). This is an effort to push for the administrators to add a globally accepted emoji that could be used across all the Internet platforms.

At the moment, the branded emoji works for the #bitcoin” or “#btc hashtags only. It doesn’t work for the “$BTC” tag yet, even though this hashtag is also popular amongst Twitter users when discussing cryptocurrency trading.

Dorsey Pushing for Universal Bitcoin Emoji

At the moment, there is no Bitcoin symbol Recommended For General Interchange (RGI). This implies that there is no generally accepted emoji supported by several online platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, WhatsApp, and others. However, Dorsey’s tweet suggests that he wants this to change.

Dorsey might get his wish as Unicode has been supporting the Bitcoin symbol as one of its currency signs for three years now. However, there is no generally accepted emoji version of the cryptocurrency at the moment. Thus, the symbol is only displayed in the black and white glyph, and not the popular orange color it is known for.

It is unclear if or when the Bitcoin emoji will be adopted as part of the universal web standard. However, it is excellent news that famous personalities like Jack Dorsey are taking the initiative and promoting its adoption.

Twitter has been one of the social media platforms where hashtags are used the most. The social media platform charges companies around $1 million to add their branded emoji or symbol after a designated hashtag. This is to help the companies differentiate their brands from that of their competitors. As a result of this, this helps these companies to create excitement and recognition amongst their customers.

Dorsey has also well-known for his favorable cryptocurrency stance. In March last year, he put together Square Crypto, a small team tasked with helping the development of Bitcoin in various ways. He also patented a new fiat-crypto payment gateway in January 2020, as he intends to provide more services within the cryptocurrency space.

His stance isn’t surprising considering the fact that his payment platform, Square, has been supporting Bitcoin trading for six years now. These latest developments could be ways for Dorsey to provide more services in the global crypto sector.
